Our Past and Our Future
The Church of the Guardian Angels was founded in 1961 as a Mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Lake Worth, to meet the needs of a growing community. Fr. Charles B Farrar was the first priest to be appointed vicar, The Mission was housed in two stores on what is now Lantana Road.
The following year, 1962, the congregation moved to the present location on Cardinal Lane in Lantana, using a portable church building that was placed on a concrete pad that still exists.
In 1963,
Fr David C Kennedy was appointed Vicar and has been the priest in residence ever since.
The Parish Hall and four classrooms were built in 1965 with the worship services continuing to be held in the portable church
In 1967,
the congregation gave up the portable church and moved totally into the Parish Hall. The portable church remains in use today in Honduras. After ten years as a mission, the Parish became self-supporting in 1971. in 1972 the parish status achive. Fr Kennedy became the first rector.
Construction / Groundbreaking of the Parish Church began in 1979 and the first Mass was celebrated there on Lady Day 1983. The church was consecrated in 1991 by Bishop Schofield.
In 1989,
the rectory was built on the western side of the church property. The parish has received three substantial legacies from faithful parishioners. One made the construction of the church possible and another paid for the rectory and the installation of the pipe organ. A significant gift made it possible to pay off the mortgage on the church in 1999. The vestments and appointments have been acquired over the years by gifts and memorials. Fr. Kennedy retired in 2003 and was followed by Fr. Craig O’ Brien as the second rector from 2003 until February 2007. In 2007, Fr. Kennedy came out of retirement to lead the parish once again, This time as Priest-in-Charge. Fr. Kennedy continues to direct the parish.
